Gerry Gentry, age 93, passed away in her home on Wednesday, August 28, 2013. She was born October 31, 1919, in Sidon, Arkansas, to Susan Mary Francis Singleton and A. M. Vaughan. She attended Searcy and Pangburn schools and Arkansas Teachers College (Lyon University) in Batesville, Arkansas. She taught school for a short time before marrying Readus D. Gentry of Searcy on November 7, 1941. They moved to various states due to his work with Texas Eastern Transmission Corp., retiring in 1982 and returning to Searcy, in 1983.
She was a faithful, loving member of: First Baptist Church of Joaquin, Joaquin, Texas; Mobberly Avenue Baptist Church, Longview, Texas; Faith Assembly of God Church, Searcy, Arkansas and served as a Gideon's wife . She taught Sunday school, supervised vacation bible schools, mentored young women, and was a loving friend to many. She was employed with Fedway/Dillard's Department Store in Longview, Texas, deriving much pleasure as a bridal consultant. She loved raising her family and being part of a close community. She was always ready to help whenever and wherever she could.
Gerry was preceded in death by her husband Readus D. Gentry, daughter Linda Durke, and sons Paul R. Gentry and Jerald L.Gentry, son-in-law, John Martin, her parents, and 13 brothers and sisters. She is survived by 2 daughters Susan Martin of Searcy, and Carole Sherman, and husband, Ron of Norman, Oklahoma. She has 4 grandchildren: Taylor Durke, and wife Alyson, of Atlanta, Georgia; Jordan Durke of Houston, Texas; Allison Sherman of Norman, Oklahoma; and Morgan Sherman of Dallas, Texas. She has 2 great-grandchildren, Sadie Durke and Harrison Durke of Atlanta, Georgia and 1 brother-in-law, Lyndle Gentry, Searcy, and one son-in-law, Tom Durke of Allen, Texas.
