Leonard Von West, 72, of Cord died Thursday, June 28, 2007 at his home. He was born on September 21, 1934 in Cord and was the son of Jessie and Pearl (Arms) West.
He was a retired jailor having worked for the Independence County Sheriff's Department.
Von was a member of the Cord Baptist Church for over 30 years. He was also a member of the Bayou Dota Masonic Lodge #126 in Charlotte and was a 32nd degree Shriner. He was also a veteran and served in the U. S. Army from March of 1955 until March of 1957. He liked talking to family and friends and loved to give nicknames to everyone. Von loved sports especially football, basketball, and NASCAR racing and really enjoyed attending basketball games. He collected arrowheads and turkey beards and made turkey box calls. He loved his garden and loved to watch it grow and was very proud of his farm and the three fish ponds that are located there.
Von is survived by his wife, Ina (Reaves) West of the home; son, Michael Von West of Newark; daughter, Marilyn Kaye Kendrix of Biloxi, Mississippi; stepson, Dwayne Cobb of Little Rock; stepdaughter, Denise Cobb of Edwardsville, Illinois; sister, Lola Prince of Batesville; two grandchildren, Sheina Tubbs and Graham Cobb; and two great-grandchildren, Trinity and Tyler Tubbs.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Don West.
Funeral services are at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Cord Baptist Church with Brother Jeff Childers officiating.
Pallbearers are Don Wayne Anderson, Gene Melton, Cody Melton, Justin Melton, J. C. Richmond, and Gene Lucy. Honorary pallbearers are Elzmore Long, Jack Austin, Ronnie Melton, Marion Martin, Rex Paul and Morgan Douglas.
