George Chapman (Colored), a highly respected Negro of Newport, formerly of Searcy, was buried at Oak Grove cemetery here Sunday afternoon by the Dillinger funeral home of Newport. Funeral services were held at the Searcy Sanctified church of which he was a member, Reverend Oastes of Little Rock preaching the funeral sermon. Mrs. P. H. Van Dyke, Miss Margaret Van Dyke and Miss Bessie Watson of Newport attended the funeral.
George was born in Searcy March 1, 1876, and lived here until about 24 years ago. White here he worked a long time on the Searcy-Kensett railroad crew. He proudly boasted that Mr. T. L. He was a member of a "string band" which played regularly for dances at the Gill House.
In Newport he worked for years for Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Van Dyke. He died of a heart attack on November 11.
George Chapman was industrious, reliable, trustworthy and faithful. He had many friends among both white and colored, who will miss him.
He is survived by his wife Anna Chapman and a stepson, Robert Hanes of Newport; a sister, Mat Anna Smith of Searcy 2 cousins, Sue Eppes Dee Henderson of Searcy; and the following nieces and nephews, all of Searcy; Connie Smith, Maggie Lane, Anna Bernice Johnson, Gwendolyn Turner, Jerry Myers, Marvin Lee Chapman, Mutt Chapman, and a host of other cousins, here and elsewhere.
