When Samuel Herman "Sam" Dorton and his twin brother Joseph Patton were born on December 1, 1911, in Texas, their father, John, was 41, and their mother, Telitha, was 33. He married Marcella Mae Green on July 2, 1932. They had one child during their marriage. He died as a young father on August 29, 1933, in Bald Knob, Arkansas, at the age of 20.
