Dudley William Arnold Jr, 85, a resident of Quitman, AR entered eternal rest at Shiloh Nursing Home in Springdale, Arkansas on September 4, 2019. He was born February 13, 1934 in Sacramento, CA to Dudley W. Arnold Sr and Margaret Elizabeth Perry Arnold. Dudley graduated from Grant Union High School in Del Paso Heights, CA in 1951. In 1957 he graduated from Arkansas State Teacher's College in Conway, AR with a BSE. In 1960 he received his Master's degree from Western New Mexico University, and in 1983 he received his Ph.D in education from Columbia University. The lure of higher wages brought him to the Navajo Indian Reservation where he was a high school principal. His three children were born while they lived on the reservation: Margaret Lynn, Donna Ruth, and Dudley W. Arnold III. He fought to ensure rigorous academics for his students, believing they were equally capable to children not living on the reservation. As a principal he saw his role was to run the school and provide the students with a good opportunity to learn. Later he moved to Barstow, California where he served as a well-respected elementary school principal at Daggett and Thompson school and later teaching 4th grade at Crestline. Besides his eighteen years as a teacher and 14 years as principal he worked as a farm laborer vaccinating chickens and cleaning chicken houses, as a gasoline truck driver, an army signal corp, and CW 4 Warrant officer with the California National Guard, and Company C of 489th Engineer Batallion of the Arkansas Army Reserve and 90th Regional Support Command Deslog Division, an insurance salesman and in his retirement he raised cattle and taught science to the local CHEF homeschool co-ops. Dudley also won numerous pistol shooting awards. He believed that a penny saved is a penny earned, but when he saw a need he helped. He thought that education was a key to success. As the first college graduate in his family he paid for all of his children to attend college at UCA, then aided his grandchildren with college tuition. He empowered women to have the skills to support themselves in the case of divorce or death. He gave financial assistance to single moms, firewood and hay to widows, and as long as his health held out he and his wife Carol hosted regular gatherings, making certain no one left hungry. Whenever grandchildren arrived they would request Papa's waffles, homemade French fries, or his bar-b-que ribs and beans.

Dudley is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Carol Arnold, his brother Nathan Arnold and his wife Banner of Heber Springs, Arkansas, Mary Glover of Yukon, Oklahoma; Robert Arnold and his wife Linda of Greenbrier, Arkansas, two daughters Margaret Lynn Gray and her husband Owen of Silver City, NM, and Donna "Dee" Townsend and her husband Mike of Springdale, Arkansas, and his son Bill Arnold and his wife Pam of Conway, AR. His legacy is passed on by his eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be Thursday, September 12, 2019 from 11:00-12:00 at Southside Baptist Church followed by lunch at noon. Funeral service will follow with Pastor Steve Stephens officiating. Concluding service and interment will follow at McNew Cemetery by Wolly Hollow. Pall bearers will be Mike Townsend, Bob Abrams, Bryan Holliman, Owen Gray, Chris Summerlin, and Dalton Kesner. When I was ten, I read fairytales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man, I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up. - CS Lewis
