Edgar Lee Hyde, age 95, of Pine Bluff, died Saturday, April 4, 2015. Born March 16, 1920 in Hardin community, he was a son of the later Oscar Harrison Hyde and Etta Mae Owen Hyde. He graduated from Pine Bluff High School in 1939.
Mr. Hyde was drafted into United States Navy in 1942. His service started in boot camp at Great Lakes, Ill., where he attended basic engineering school. He was then sent to San Diego, Calif. where he attended diesel mechanics school. He served aboard the USS Kwajalein Bay aircraft carrier bin San Diego, and was assigned to the repair division. Fortunately, Edgar learned to play the guitar as a teenager, and this lead to him being selected to participate in the USO War Bond Tour in 1944. He was able to play with some of the most well-known musicians in California.
He was a ,metal worker for the Iron Workers and Bridge Fabricators Union and worked on numerous construction projects around Pine Bluff, including the Pine Bluff Arsenal and International Paper Company. Blessed with a curious, bright, and creative mind, Mr. Hyde was able to come up with ideas, and then translate those ideas into a finished project without any drawings needed or made. From building his own guitar using a neck from broken one attached to gas tank from Model-A Ford, he could construct virtually anything using metal. He continued working up until several months prior to his death. In there was a part of an old machine that was broken and the part was no longer available , Edgar Lee Hyde was the man to call. His hand-machined parts kept the Grant County Courthouse clock ticking in Sheridan and " Little Miss Sunbeam" swinging at the end of Main Street in Pine Bluff.
A favorite project that he had done was buying a piece of land in Ozark Mountains "in middle of nowhere". He had a road built back to the property, which was located next to a spring-fed creek. There he built a cabin with an electric system using the stream to power a slow-speed generator that he made and also pipe fresh water to the cabin. His family enjoyed the cabin for many years.
