February 19, 1919 - October 5, 2012

Herman D. (Daniel) Jones, passed away Friday afternoon, October 5, 2012 at the age of 93 years, 7 months, and 17 days. An American Hero, he was one of many of the ”Greatest Generation.” He was a proud veteran of the United States Army and served in the Pacific during World War II. He later worked as a truck driver.

Mr. Jones was born in Paris, TX (Blossom Community) February 19, 1919 to Harry Andrew and Azzie Lee Ramsey Jones. He was the third son of three boys and three girls. He grew up in a sharecropper’s family from Paris, TX and later moved to the Richwood Community near Arkadelphia, AR. He joined the C. C. Camp at Hope, AR at an early age in order to help his family. He was so proud of all the educational projects he learned there – building fences, laying sewer lines, and he loved marching. Having been prepared for war, he joined the U. S. Army in October, 1942 leaving behind a baby girl, only three weeks old. He returned home at the end of World War II (December, 1945). He worked odd jobs in Arkadelphia, AR and later began working with the Coca Cola Company of Southwest Arkansas(Arkadelphia Warehouse) and later transferred to the Camden Coca Cola Bottling Company in 1959 for a total of 21 years with Coca Cola. He opened and owned the First State Beauty Supply Store in Camden and later worked at the first Wal-Mart store in Camden where he was manager of the hardware department until his retirement when he purchased the Jimmy Smith Mobile Home Park (now Jones Mobile Home Park).

Herman loved life to the fullest – he loved people, his country and his friends and family. Most of all he he loved his wife of 32 years just as much as she loved him as they told each other daily. He fought a strong battle to live after overcoming prostrate cancer in 1989, congestive heart failure, COPD and a major stroke in October 17, 2011. Through it all he maintained his intelligence and never complained through 5 pneumonia attacks after his stroke. Herman was of the Baptist Faith and knew God as he lived by his faith each day. It was through God’s plan that his mansion became ready with welcoming arms.

Herman is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Clyde Carlton Jones and his wife, Stella and Woodrow Wilson Jones and his wife, Lois; two sisters, Doris Alene Hubbard and her husband, Eutis and Ottie Alma Moore; two brothers-in-law, James W. Reaves and William Roy Cassell; and a son-in-law, Joseph E. Fenton.

He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann Cassell Jones of Camden, AR; a daughter, Brenda Gail Fenton of Benton, AR; one grandson, Michael Joe Fenton of New York; one sister, Syble Lee Reaves of Beebe, AR; and sisters-in-law, Katy Frances Cassell of Camden, AR and Joyce Cassell of West Memphis, AR; as well as many friends, nieces, nephews, and cousins who loved him dearly as he did them. He is also survived by special children in his life, Emma Rose Burson, Ariel and Logan Nipp and special niece, Linda Marie Condor.

The family would like to express a special thanks to Dr. Daniel and Dr. Fohn, the Ouachita County Hospital Staff, and the Ouachita Nursing and Rehab Center staff. Only God could do more than they have done.

Proctor Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. A memorial celebration of Herman’s life will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 7, 2012 at Proctor Funeral Home with Erin Kay officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday, 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Interment will be at Missouri Cemetery near Chidester. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Camden, the First Baptist Church of Camden, the Chidester Museum or Missouri Cemetery.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).
