Morris Doyne Mitchell, Sr., 83, of North Little Rock, Arkansas, died Monday, April 16, 2012, at St. Vincent Infirmary. Mr. Mitchell was born September 21, 1928, in Helena, Arkansas, a son of the late Willie Morris and Margaret Eliza (Ives) Mitchell. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Betty Jean Mitchell, who died August 11, 1994; and a brother, Charles Mitchell.
Mr. Mitchell was a veteran of the Marine Corps; and retired from the National Guard after 20+ years of service. He was one of the first to hold the rank of Command Sergeant Major (CSM) in the Arkansas Army National Guard. He was known by many as one who smoked the short cigars. He was Baptist; and served as a deacon of the First Baptist Church in Hazen in the 1970's. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors.
Survivors are his children, Morris Mitchell Jr. and wife Debbie of Little Rock; Gail Haas and husband Steve of Maumelle; Jane Ann Zulpo and husband Angelo "Zup" of Bigelow; a brother, Billy Mitchell of Newark, Arkansas; a sister, Katherine Fry of Rosebud, Arkansas; grandchildren, Matthew Mitchell of Chicago; Devon Riggle of Bryant; Kristen Lewis of Maumelle; Chris Coker of Sherwood; Stephanie Ott of Maumelle; 3 great-grandchildren; and a number of nephews and nieces.
Graveside service will be 2:30pm, Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at Mayflower Cemetery, under the direction of Griffin Leggett Conway Funeral Home,
