The reason most people do not recognize an opportunity when they meet it is because it usually goes around wearing overalls and looks like hard work. John David knew the definition of hard work and was not afraid to get dirty. His work history varied from gas station attendant, roughneck, bank clerk, and logging to partnering in water well drilling. In 1969, John David and his stepfather, Truman Mooney, purchased Jim Mooty Oil Company and became partners in Mooney & Scott Oil Company. In 1983, Amoco ended its distribution in Arkansas and John David merged with Tri-County Oil Company. He was the Exxon distributor for 23 years. After John David retired, he donated a huge amount of his time to help maintain First Baptist Church where he served on the Property Committee for 40 years. John David has been a member of First Baptist Church for 59 years and a faithful member of the Faith Sunday School Class.

John David was preceded in death by his father Elsworth David Scott and his parents Truman and Ollie Ray Rudd Scott Mooney. Also preceding him were his paternal grandparents George and Luna (O’Bannion) Scott and maternal grandparents Aubrey and Sadie (Sanders,) Rudd.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Diane Paschal Scott; a son, Mike Scott and wife Melissa of Magnolia; and a daughter, Trace Scott Vaughan and husband William of Minden, LA. He is also survived by grandsons Blake Watson and wife Morgan of Magnolia, Skylar Scott, Josh Minter and Garrett Vaughan of Shreveport, LA.
