Everette Dene Hardin

DIXON, Ill. — Dene Hardin, 82, passed quietly at his home in Dixon, Ill., on Saturday, June 12, 2010, with his family and friends close by him.

Born Nov. 29, 1927, at Strawberry, he was the son of W.B. and Dovie Castle Hardin. He married Leota Guntharp on June 27, 1947.

He graduated from Hoxie High School and attended Arkansas State University. He served in World War II as a U.S. Navy Seabee and, while stationed in California in 1945, was one of eight sailors selected to attend the opening ceremony of the United Nations Peace Conference held in San Francisco.

He was employed at Northwestern Steel and Wire Co. of Sterling, Ill., for 34 years, retiring in 1984.

He was a founding member, past president and life-member of the Green River Saddle Club of Amboy, Ill., a member of the Fulton, Ill., and Ogle County, Ill., saddle clubs, the Moose Lodge of Mount Morris, Ill., and the Polo and later the Dixon American Legion posts. He was a contributor to both the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts in Sterling.

An avid outdoorsman, he hunted deer, small game and mushrooms and blackberries to share with his friends, always with his beagles accompanying him. As a fisherman, he fished the waters of Illinois, Wisconsin and Arkansas for his favorite catches.

A longtime horseman, he loved to ride along with his many friends. He attended the cross country trail ride in Alley Springs, Mo., for many years and participated in the Pony Express ride commemorating the Illinois sesquicentennial of 1968 and the ride across Iowa. Or just seeking some time alone, often he and his horse would go out for an evening ride.

Survivors include his wife, Leota Hardin of Dixon; one son, Randy (Margaret) Hardin, also of Dixon; one grandson, Sgt. Robert (Erika) Hardin of Mililani, Hawaii; sister, Betty A. Richardson of Walnut Ridge; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Christopher L. Hardin (1966); a brother, W.C. Hardin; sister, Wanda F. Ades; and his mother and father.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service in the chapel of Higginbotham Funeral Service, 401 West Main St., Walnut Ridge. Interment will follow in Lawrence Memorial Park.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ben Hardin, Ron Hardin, G. David Guntharp, Jackie Guntharp, Joe Bryan Richardson, Mike Verkler, Donnie Wallis and Jerry Wallis.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to benefit the Veterans Memorial Park in Dixon.
