William R Bolling was born in Perry County, Alabama to Thornberry and Nancy B Radford Bolling. His father, Thornberry Bolling was a descendant of Pocahontas, was born in South Carolina in 1817.William received a common school education and at the age of twenty left his studies to join Company F, 1st Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi mixed regiment of infantry. He was at the battle of New Madrid, was captured at Island No 10, served six weeks at Camp Douglas, Illinois and from there went to Madison, Wisconsin at which place he was exchanged in September, 1862. He afterward served a short time in the 54th Alabama Infantry, and after his discharge joined the 13th Alabama, and known as the 56th Alabama Cavalry until the close of the war. In October, 1866, he married Carrie R Horn, daughter of William S and Sarah L Horn of Alabama. To this union ten children were born. In 1869 he accompanied his parents to Arkansas, he was a farmer until 1880 in Alma, Arkansas. He later was engaged in the mercantile business in Alma.
He was a member of the Masonic Fraternity and Knights of Honor. He was a member of the Baptist Church.
