Betty Jo Brumley Jones of Escondido, California, formerly of Alma, Arkansas and Fort Smith, Arkansas passed away on April 16, 2011 after a short illness at the age of 85 years. She was born March 4, 1926 in Chelsea, Oklahoma to Clarence B and Lois Virginia Ford Brumley. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Martha Brumley Brown, brother Clarence "Sonny" Brumley, and a dear aunt, Eunice Ford.
When the Depression hit the country, the Brumley family lost their business in Chelsea and moved to Alma to live with Betty's grandparents, Joe and India Martin Ford. Betty started the second grade in Alma in 1933, and graduated from Alma High School in 1944 as Salutatorian of her class. During her years at Alma High School she participated in basketball and track. After graduation Betty was chosen to go with a small group of young women to work at the Pentagon during World War II. David Brinkley's book, "Washington Goes To War", mentions the ‘girls from Alma' and the role they played during the war era. In 1988 Betty retired from Whirlpool, and in June of 2007 she moved to Escondido to live with her daughter, Linda. She was a former member of the Park Hill church of Christ in Fort Smith.She is survived by daughters, Judy Salley of High Point, North Carolina, and Linda Havins and husband Darrell of Escondido; sons Clayton Jones of Mobile, Alabama, and Carl Jones and wife Lawanda, of Magnolia, Arkansas; grand -children Heather Havins Merrick and husband James of Santa Barbara, California, Andrea Havins Gibbs and husband David of San Diego, California, Troy Havins andwife Andrea of Abilene, Texas, Celeste Jones of Fort Smith, Hollie Jones Massey and husband Wesley of Daphne, Alabama, Rachel Jones Dickson and husband Stephen of Fort Smith, Kaylee Jones of Magnolia, Arkansas, and Kyle Jones and wife Patricia also of Magnolia; great grandchildren Chloe and Ryder Merrick of Santa Barbara, California, Chandler Mullinax, II of Fort Smith, Hannah Jernigan and Dalton Massey of Daphne, Alabama, and Adalie Dickson of Fort Smith; brothers, David Brumley and wife Rachel of Bella Vista, Arkansas and Ron Brumley and wife Linda of Bellevue, Washington. Many nieces, nephews, and life-long friends also survive her
