GRAMLING, John Thomas - John T. Gramling of Avoca, postmaster, merchant and many years well known citizens of the east end of the county, died Tuesday night just before midnight after a long illness. Mr. Gramling had been in poor health for many years but for a year past had been confined to his home most of the time, his daughter acting as postmaster. The funeral will be held this afternoon at Tuck's Chapel at 2:00 o'clock and will be under the auspices of the Odd Fellows of Avoca and Rogers, to which order he had belonged most of his life. We are unable to secure an obituary for this issue but we understand that Mr. Gramling was 67 years old and had lived at Avoca almost since the location of the town. He was Frisco agent there before going into the mercantile business. It was nearly 30 years ago that the Democrat editor made his first acquaintance of Avoca and in those days the entertainment of the stranger was looked after by John Gramling, Hunter Peel, Bob Allen and Dr. Munce Rice - and they did a good job of it, too. And many times since then it has been the pleasure of the writer to listen to the whimsical comment and original philosophy of Mr. Gramling. His death will be regretted by everyone who has known Avoca and its people. He is survived by his wife and two children, Harry Gramling and Miss Annie, both of Avoca.

John Thomas Gramling was born at Milan, Mo. March 25, 1859 and passed away at his home in Avoca, Ark. on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1925 at the age of 66 years, eight months and thirteen days. Mr. Gramling came with his parents to Arkansas when a boy about fourteen years of age and has from that time made his home in Benton county. On June 21, 1885 he married Miss May Stephenson and to this union was born three children, two of whom, with their mother, are left to mourn their irreparable loss. Mr. Gramling was an elder in the Christian church at Avoca, becoming a member of that church in early manhood. Burial was made at Tuck's Chapel on Thursday, Dec. 10th and the general esteem in which he was held was shown by the very large attendance at the funeral. Mr. Gramling was one of Avoca's real pioneers and served the community in many public positions. Many years ago he was Frisco agent at Avoca; he was for a number of years a justice of the peace, notary public, school director, and for several years had been postmaster. He was a member of the Odd Fellows fraternity; also of Modern Woodmen brotherhood. Besides his immediate family and relatives Mr. Gramling leaves a host of friends who had learned to lean upon him as a wise counselor; and a truly trustworthy advisor in matters pertaining to everyday life in his home vicinity. His memory will long live in the hearts of those who knew him best. A Correspondent.
