James Lewis Pope, 72, of Smackover, a former employe of Gulf Oil Corp., died in a Smackover hospital Monday at 11:15 p.m. after a short illness. He was associated with Gulf for 40 years prior to his retirement in 1956. Mr. Pope was born in Brandon, Miss., Oct. 16, 1883, the son of Dovie and Willis Pope. He was a veteran of World War I and a member of Solon Hodge Post 161 of the American Legion and of the Masonic Lodge 717. He was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Smackover and a member of the Men's Bible Class of that church. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Laura Pope; a son, Bill Pope of Corpus Christi, Tex.; three daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Calahan of Sepulveda, Calif., Mrs. Ruth Barnes of Little Rock and Mrs. Evelyn Williams of Spokane, Wash.; eight grandchildren; one great grandchild; two brothers, C. E. Pope of New Orleans and S. G. Pope of McComb, Miss.; and a sister, Miss Irma Pope of Jackson, Miss. Funeral services have been announced for Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Smackover, with the Rev. D. C. McAtee officiating, assisted by the Rev. L. W. Rhodes. Burial will be in the Smackover Cemetery under the direction of Young's. Active pallbearers will be Homer Miller, D. D. Lewis, W. F. Strain, E. C. Whisenhunt, F. F. Hicks and Henry Graves. Dr. A. H. Doren retired employes of Gulf Oil Corp. will be honorary pallbearers. The body will be taken to the church at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday to lie in state until time for the funeral.
