The land for the McNew Cemetery was donated by William McNew (b. 15 Feb,
d. 16 Nov 1893) In 1855, William moved his wife and six children to
Arkansas and settled on 160 acres of land near the cemetery. He later
acquired considerably more land in the general vicinity and became a
substantial farmer in the area.
In 1893, six months before he died, William McNew built what was to become
the McNew Chapel and donated three acres of land to the Methodist Episcopal
Church. He rode a horse to Russellville to present the gift to the Methodist
Assembly. When he returned, he was so please, he told his family -- "Well,
I've done what I wanted done for a long time. Now we can have a church."
The chapel was destroyed by a tornado in the 1920's. Old funeral home records
often refer to this cemetery as "McNew Chapel."
As of Nov 1, 2001, there are 556 burial plots, 108 of which have been
designated as "unknown." Census was taken in 1979 by Hattie Ann Kelso,
James Kilduff and Lisa Henry.
