Married Helen Fletcher May 16, 1950

John Delmer “JD” Mallard Jr. and Helen Frances “Bright Eyes” Fletcher were married on May 16, 1950, at the home of her sister, Barbara. They had one son and three daughters, John Michael Mallard (February 7th, 1951), Sheila Kay Mallard Dunn, (December 2nd, 1954), Therese Mallard Free (March 5th, 1959), and Joetta (Middle Name) Mallard Elliott (May 20th, 1963 ).

JD and Bright Eyes made Gould their home, often involved in civic events and causes, and were very active in The First Christian Church of Gould. Together, they placed family above all else and took great pride in their children and grandchildren, teaching them lessons that have carried them through life, while sharing with the next generation.

JD was born June 26th, 1922, at Humnoke (Lonoke County) to John Douglas Mallard (1889-1961) and Grace Rowe Mallard (1902-1979), who were married December 24th, 1920. He was one of four siblings. The price of his birth was one toe sack of potatoes, payable to the midwife. His exact birth year was dubious, until he signed up for the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC), which required a birth certificate. His service in the CCC took him to Oregon and to the rugged mountains of Idaho, before he signed up with the Navy, which took him all around the world. He was an underwater welder for the US Navy, building and repairing ships and bridges, and continued this trade in his civilian life in larger US cities, going on to become founder and owner of Mallard Metal Construction based in Gould.

He was a retired rural mail carrier for the US Postal Service, and had the route surrounding Gould in Lincoln County. He knew a little something about most residents on his route, and never forgot a good story from any of them. JD had total devotion to the Boy Scouts and to the future youth of this country. He was on the Gould School Board and dedicated to the Church. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) for 57 years and was mentor to many participants in the program. He was the longest continuous sober member when he passed on March 5th, 2007. He was an avid outdoorsman and humanitarian; he was witty, approachable, fair, and honest.
