When Bertie Mae Simpson was born on July 19, 1913, in DeWitt, Arkansas, her father, Sam, was 30, and her mother, Orra, was 22. She married James Alfred McGhee on October 20, 1928, in Eudora, Arkansas. They had three children during their marriage. She died on December 26, 1992, in De Witt, Arkansas, at the age of 79, and was buried there.
