Mary Lee (Smith) Steele daughter of Lotha Oliver Smith and Erica N (Churchill) Smith.

Mary Steele, 71, of Newark died Sunday, April 26, 2009 in Little Rock. She was born in Cord, Arkansas on August 17, 1937 and was the daughter of Lotha Smith and Erica Churchill Smith.

Mary graduated from Cord Charlotte High School in 1955 where she was valedictorian.
She worked for 18 years at the Bank of Newark serving as loan office and branch manager. She also worked for First Community Bank where she was one of the original 14 employees that started the bank in August of 1997. She was vice-president of new accounts. She loved flowers and tending to her yard and also loved to cook. She assisted her husband with the financial management of his cattle operation. Mary was a member of Sidney Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Mary is survived by her husband of 53 years, Paul Steele of Newark; son, David Steele, also of Newark; four grandchildren: Nicholas Jordan Steele, Jennifer Taylor Steele, Zachary David Steele and Jordan Cade Steels, all of Newark; one great-grandchild, Harley Nicholas Steel also of Newark and one brother, Curtis Smith of Batesville.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Faith Hopewell Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Batesville with Rev. Alan Meizner, Bobby Coleman and Joel Breeding officiating.

Burial will follow the services at Hopewell Cemetery in Cord under the direction of Roller-Crouch Funeral Home of Batesville.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Boris Dover, Kenny Gerhardt, Dale Cole, Brian Goff, Hershall Marshall, and Randy Rewis. Honorary pallbearers are the employees of First Community Bank, Shirley Montague, Jane Marshall, Dr. David Churchill, Steele Burge and Shirley Ward.

Memorial may be made to the Hopewell Cemetery Fund, PO Box 49, Cord, AR 72524.
