Walter Madden Pearce, 57, of Bentonville, died Nov. 28 in Sparks Memorial Hospital, Fort Smith. Born Sept. 25, 1922, at Bentonville, he was the son of Fred and Opal Mayberry Pearce. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Bentonville and was an assistant postmaster. He served with the Bentonville Postal Service for more than 30 years and was superintendent of postal operations. He was past president of the Northwest Arkansas District of the National Carriers Association. A veteran of World War II, he served with the paratroopers, was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Verba Jo Pearce of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Valoyce Marshall of De Ridder, La., and Mrs. Patricia Payne of Fort Smith; his mother of Bentonville; a brother, Fred A. Pearce of Springdale; one sister, Mrs. Joyce Corley of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Callison-McKinney funeral Home, Bentonville, with the Rev. Don Evans and the Rev. Jack Vinson officiating. Burial will be in Bentonville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Sparks Memorial Hospital in Fort Smith or Bates Memorial Hospital in Bentonville.

BENTONVILLE - Verba Jo Pearce, 78, of Bentonville and widow of Walter M. Pearce, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rogers. She was born April 20, 1923, in Pea Ridge to Oscar Theodore and Oma Lee Callis Dean. She married Walter Madden Pearce on March 15, 1941. She was a charter member of the Northwest Arkansas Genealogical Society and established the library for the group. She was an author and co-author of several genealogical books and articles. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Bentonville, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the choir. She was an artist.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Valoyce Marshall and Jim of Lawton, Okla., and Patricia Payne and Ross of Fort Smith; three grandchildren, Charlotte Gray and husband Brian of Mason, Mich., and Jimmy Marshall and Matt Marshall, both of Lawton; two great-grandchildren, Ariel Wellman and Michael Wellman.

Verba Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Madden Pearce; her parents, Oscar and Oma Dean; and three sisters.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today, June 12, 2001, at Callison-Lough Funeral Home in Bentonville with the Rev. Larry Shields officiating. Burial will be in Bentonville Cemetery.
