When William Travis Garland was born on September 16, 1936, in Higden, Arkansas, his father, James, was 33 and his mother, Orpha, was 25. He had five brothers and three sisters. He died on January 22, 2008, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, at the age of 71, and was buried in his hometown.
