ELKINS — James K. Carter, 81, of Elkins died Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at Washington Regional Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 24, 1928, in Elkins, the son of Samuel Elmer and Dewey Anderson Carter. He was preceded in death by his stepbrother, John Layton.

Jim served 37 years with the Elkins public schools, 11 years as basketball coach and 26 years as superintendent. He was a lifetime member of Elkins Community Church. He also served the community in many ways including: charter member of Elkins Volunteer Fire Department, charter member of Elkins Lions Club and he started the Elkins Little League baseball program. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and gardener. He received great joy in sharing the abundance of these hobbies.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Louise Carter; two daughters, Marilyn Sue Carter and Mary Jo Carter and husband Wally Martinez; a brother, Jack Carter and wife Rada of Elkins; two sisters, Bettie Miller and husband Jim of Fayetteville and Patsy Banks and husband Jeff of Springdale; an aunt, Lela Anderson-Barron of Fayetteville; numerous nieces and nephews; and many more family and friends.

Funeral service will be at 11 am. Saturday, March 28, at Elkins Community Church. Pastor Lon Hudson will officiate.

Burial will be in McCord Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Moore's Chapel in Fayetteville.

ELKINS — Mary Louise Cowan Carter, age 88, of Elkins, entered eternal rest Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2015. She was surrounded by family at the Willard Walker Hospice House in Fayetteville. Born Oct. 4, 1927, in Savoy, Ark., to Russell and Ruth Donnell Cowan, she was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 62 years, James K. Carter; and her sister Bonnie Skrapka.

She is survived by her daughters, Marilyn Sue Carter and Mary Jo Carter and husband Wally Martinez all of Elkins; one sister Jean Castoe of Davis, Okla.; two grandchildren Kenneth Martinez and Anna Crow; five great-grandchildren; numerous loving nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Thursday, Oct. 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Moore's Chapel in Fayetteville. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Elkins Community Church with burial to follow in McCord Cemetery near Elkins. To place an online tribute visit www.mooresfuneralchapel.com.
