Ralph S. Fetzer, Sr., 80, of Springfield, Missouri, formerly of Newark and West Memphis died Sunday, June 4, 2007.
He was born July 5, 1926 in Newark, Arkansas and was the son of Thomas Owens and Lola Davis Fetzer.
Ralph started working at J.A. Riggs Equipment Services in West Memphis and worked there for 42 years. He began his career at Riggs in the steam rack, and then he became a mechanic. He then went on to the parts department where he soon became the manager. Then he worked in sales for a while and eventually became the store manager. The Jaycees in West Memphis awarded him "Boss of the Year" in 1967. The most important things to him were his family and God. Providing for his family and spending time with them was what he loved most of all. He was an elder for many years at the Westminster Presbyterian Church and also at Faith Hopewell Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was a big supporter of the Boy Scouts of America Food Bank and Help & Hope. Ralph loved to tell stories and joke; he was the life of the party. He enjoyed wood working and especially making Adirondack chairs.
He married his wife of 60 years on December 25, 1946 and she survives him. He is also survived by a son, Ralph Fetzer, Jr. of Orlando, Florida; three daughters: Virginia Tomerlin and her husband, Vernon of Atlanta, Georgia, Dortha Thomas and her husband, Richard of Stanton, Tennessee, Patricia Cain and her husband, Phil of Springfield, Missouri. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Judi Johnston and her husband, Todd, Vern Tomerlin, Hank Thomas and his wife, Mandy, Melissa Fowler and her husband, Jason, Heather Hutchings and her husband, Doug, Natasha Thaden and her husband, James and Sean Fetzer; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Nellie Haley of Danville, Virginia. Other survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Alice Fetzer.
Funeral services are at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday at the Faith Hopewell Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Alan Meinzer officiating.
Pallbearers are Vernon Tomerlin, Richard Thomas, Phil Cain, Hank Thomas, Vern Tomerlin and Sean Fetzer. Honorary pallbearers are Todd Johnston, Jason Fowler, Doug Hutchings and James Thaden.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6 at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Hopewell Cemetery in Cord under the direction of Roller-Crouch Funeral Home of Batesville (870) 793-4161.
