Henry E. Berry, 72, prominent Smackover businessman, died in a Smackover hospital Wednesday after a protracted illness. A partner in Union Supply Co., Mr. Berry was active in business, civic and church affairs of Smackover, taking a leading role in Boy Scout work. He was a veteran of World War I, a member of the First Baptist Church of Smackover, a member of Warren G. Harding Masonic Lodge and a Shriner. Mr. Berry was born in Hamburg March 1, 1893, the son of John and Myrtle Rogers Berry. He had lived in Smackover since 1923. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Bessie Berry; a son, John Berry of Smackover, a daughter, Mrs. Katie Austin of Magnolia; a brother, Robert Berry, of Hamburg; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Pearson and Mrs. Lillian Pearson, both of Fountain Hill; and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Smackover with the Rev. D. C. McAtee and the Rev. Harold K. Davis officiating. Burial will be in Smackover City Cemetery under the direction of Young's, with graveside rites, conducted by Warren G. Harding Masonic Lodge No. 717. Active pallbearers will be Harvey Thompson, Cecil Whisenhunt, Ned Price, Henry Graves, J. Y. Moore and W. P. Dean. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. A. H. Doren, members of Warren G. Harding Masonic Lodge, and members of McHaney Men's Bible Class in which Mr. Berry was active. The body will be taken to the church at 12 o'clock noon. (The El Dorado Times - August 26, 1965)
