Jake
May 30, 1924- November 5, 2017
Jake Frank Dyer, 93, of Dyer, passed away Sunday, November 5, 2017 in Fort Smith, after a three-month illness.
He was born May 30, 1924 in Dyer to the late Asa and Mary Lee Dyer.
He was a Navy combat veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific. In addition to his duties onboard his ship, he also served as a gunner on amphibious landing craft. He saw action from the Solomon Islands to Okinawa. After the war, he worked in construction as an ironworker in the Chicago area. He married Wanda Porter in 1950 before moving back to their hometown of Dyer in 1964, when Jake began ranching and farming as well as continuing to work as an ironworker. He was a JP on the first Crawford County Quorum Court and served as a Democrat Party county committee man for many years. He attended the Dyer United Methodist Church and served as the trustee chairman for the church. He enjoyed gardening and sharing his garden produce with family and friends. For the past six years, he assisted with taking care of the Dyer Cemetery. After retiring from construction work, he continued ranching and farming until his death.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda; and four sisters, Reba Winford, Leona Muzzall, June Steele, and Mary Myers.
He is survived by a daughter, Mary Fitting and husband Lawrence of Fort Smith; a son, Joel Dyer of Dyer; a sister, Ruth Pennington of Fayetteville; and twin brother, Mack Dyer of Fort Smith. He is also survived by grandchildren, Caleb Fitting, Sarah Smith and husband Chad, and Jacob Fitting; and by great-grandchildren, Ben and Ethan Smith.
Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 9, 2017 at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow at Dyer Cemetery with Military Honors, under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren, AR
Wanda
August 12, 1929 - May 27, 2014
Wanda Porter Dyer, 84, of Dyer, AR, passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2014.
She was born August 12, 1929 in Dyer to the late Albert and Floye Porter.
She attended school at Dyer and Alma, graduating from Alma High School in 1947. She married Jake Dyer on February 4, 1950. She and Jake lived in the Chicago area until 1964, when they moved to back Arkansas and bought the farm where they lived for the next fifty years.
She was a retired nurse at Crawford County Hospital and Edds Clinic. After retirement she enjoyed many years of selling her handcrafts at arts and crafts fairs. She was also an active partner in her family's soybean, wheat, produce, and cattle farm.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, L. D. Porter.
She is survived by her husband, Jake of the home; a daughter, Mary Fitting and husband Lawrence of Fort Smith; a son, Joel Dyer of Dyer; a sister, Lillian House of Dyer; a brother, Charles Porter of Lake Wales, FL; three grandchildren, Caleb and Jacob Fitting, and Sarah Smith and husband Chad; and two great-grandchildren, Ben and Ethan Smith.
Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2014 at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Chapel with interment to follow at Dyer Cemetery, under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren.
