Mrs. Leona Clementine Berry, a resident of the Rufus Garrett Hotel, died in a local hospital at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon after a long illness. Mrs. Berry was the widow of C. A. Berry who was one of the founders of the Daily News in 1921 and continued as publisher until 1927. Born in Union County near New London, Mrs. Berry was the daughter of Robert T. and Barbara Russell Carter. She was a lifelong resident of the area and a member of the First Methodist Church. She was also a member of Gleaner's Sunday School class, the Business and Professional Women's Club, the Self-Culture Club and the Explorers Club. Survivors include; two brothers, J. L. Carter, Hot Springs, and C. D. Carter, El Dorado; three sisters, Mrs. C. C. Campbell, Magnolia, Mrs. J. T. Fike, Sr., El Dorado, and Mrs. Robert Wallingsford, El Dorado; and a number of nieces and grand nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in the Rumph Mortuary Chapel with Dr. C. Ray Hozendorf and Rev. Gary M. Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Arlington Cemetery, under the direction of Rumph's. The family will be at the home of C. D. Carter, 735 N. Flenniken St. (The El Dorado Times - May 13, 1965)
