February 21, 1914 - August 12, 2011

Mildred Ann Wagnon Steelman, age 97, of Banks Arkansas, joined the angels in heaven on August 12, 2011. She was born on February 21, 1914 to Hugh and Lula Watson Wagnon. She grew up in Banks, Arkansas, where she met her future husband, Noble O. Steelman. They had two sons, Mike and Buck. Because of Noble’s career as an educator, they lived in several towns in Arkansas and Texas. Mildred was a nurse and found work wherever they lived. In 1980, she and Noble returned to Banks, where they spent their remaining years. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church in Banks. Mildred is survived by a son, Mike Steelman and his wife Mary Lynn of Hot Springs, former daughter-in-law, Betty Steelman Clements of Rison, and a sister, Maudelle Smith of Camden. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Michael Steelman, Amanda Sostrin, Brad Steelman, Bryan Steelman, Cindy Smith, and Gene Williams, and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Noble O. Steelman; a son, Buck Steelman; two sisters, Estelle McFarland and Beadie Ross; five brothers, Odell Wagnon, Glyn Wagnon, Thelbert Wagnon, Burnet Wagnon, and Hugh Wagnon, Jr. Mildred was a generous and loving mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law. She loved playing card games and dominoes with her grandchildren. Her hobbies included sewing, needlepoint, and reading. She was a good cook, especially known for her chocolate pie and her sweet iced tea. After Noble died in 1999, she began attending the Warren Senior Citizen Center. She often said, “The Center saved my life!” The Center truly added “years to her life and life to her years.” The family extends special thanks to the staff at Wagnon Place, Life Touch Hospice of El Dorado, staff and participants at the Warren Senior Citizen Center for their support and friendship, and to Danny and Linda McDiarmid for their love and assistance to Mildred before she left her home in January of 2011. Funeral services were 2:00 p.m. Tuesday August 16, at Frazer’s Chapel with Rev. Tony Rinehart officiating. Linda Barrett was organist and soloist were Martha Jane Smith and Rev. Tony Rinehart. Burial was in McFarland Cemetery at Banks by Frazer’s Funeral Home. Active pallbearers were Michael Steelman, Mike Sostrin, Don Smith, Phillip Smith, Nick Wagnon, Dr. Gayle McFarland and Danny McDiarmid. Memorials may be made to the Missionary Baptist Church in Banks, Arkansas, or the Warren Senior Citizen Center, Warren, Arkansas.
