BENTONVILLE - Loyde Wayne Short, 77, of Bentonville, Ark., passed away Thursday, April 24, 2014, at the Highlands Health and Rehab Center in Bella Vista. He was born in the Miller community in Bentonville, on Feb 25, 1937. He was the son of Theodore Roosevelt Short and Thelma Witherell Short.

A lifetime resident of the area, his ancestors were pioneers that moved to Northwest Arkansas in 1866. Wayne attended school at the Miller School House, just North of Bentonville.

He met and later married Jo Ann Trotter on Feb. 25, 1956, on his 19th birthday. Together, they had five children, Melinda, Renee, Tim, Misty, and Melanie. They raised their children and lived their entire lives in the Miller community.

Wayne retired from the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission in 1999, after 32 years of service. During his career, he was the assistant manager at the main hatchery in Centerton, which at the time, had 17 ponds on 141 acres.

The hatchery was one of the first in the world to develop an efficient method of propagating and raising catfish on a large scale.

The ponds were used for continuous production of native and non-native fish for stocking public waters in Northwest Arkansas. Wayne was known as a sort of surrogate father to various species of fish, notably, the paddlefish. During their first few weeks of life, he fed the fish four times daily, even on his days off.

Beaver Lake was stocked with these paddlefish when they had grown to approximately 10 inches long. Today anglers are now catching paddlefish in the 30-pound range.

After his retirement, Wayne enjoyed hunting, fishing and working on his farm. He was a lifetime member of the Miller Community Church.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Tune Short; four children, Melinda Short of Bentonville, Tim and Shelly Short of Bentonville, Misty and Shane Pruitt of Hiwasse, and Melanie Short of Bentonville; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jo Ann Short; a daughter, Melissa Renee Barron; a granddaughter, Brooklyn Cummings and one brother, Leonard Short.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at the Miller Community Church at 2 p.m.

Visitation will be held at the church prior to the service from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Randall Caselman and Pastor Fred Pearrow officiating.

Burial will be held at the Miller Church Cemetery.

Memorials can be made in his name to the Miller Community Church, 12788 Punkin Hollow Road, Bentonville, AR, 72712.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Backstrom-Pyeatte Funeral Home of Springdale.
