Jewell Mitchem was the son and sixth of nine children born to Spain and Hattie Blackman Mitchem.
Jewell was a shade-tree mechanic, barber, and bus driver. He married Emma Jean, Elsie Bridges and Inez. He was the father of two children: Mary Mitchem and Claudine Campbell.
