When Joseph (Joe) Thien was born on October 11, 1879, his father, Henry, was 41 and his mother, Mary, was 29. He married Catharine Cecilia (Kate) Foppe on October 22, 1907, in Breese, Illinois. They had six children in 19 years. He died on October 19, 1950, in Perry, Arkansas, at the age of 71.
