Charles W. Coffer, 70, of 400 Spring St., died in a local hospital late Monday evening after a lengthy illness. Mr. Coffer was born in Prescott on Jan. 22, 1895. He was a retired Rock Island engineer retiring after 44 years service. He had lived in the El Dorado area for the past 44 years. He was a veteran of World War I, a member of American Legion Post 317, and a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church. Survivors include: his widow, Mrs. Velma Graham Coffer; one son, Robert Dykes of El Dorado; two sisters, Mrs. Ida Thompson of Jena, La., and Mrs. Faye Odom of Mercedes, Tex.; one brother, R. C. Coffer of Lake Charles, La.; six grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. The body was taken to the family residence at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Immanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. Jay D. Tolleson officiating assisted by the Rev. M. H. McManus. Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Cemetery under the direction of Young's. Active pallbearers will be S. R. Shackleford, David C. Ellen, J. D. Pitre, O. M. Bull, J. S. Beebe, and G. M. Thrasher. Dr. Joe Wharton, Jr and all employes of Rock Island Railroad will be honorary pallbearers. (The El Dorado Times - February 9, 1965)
