Roy N. Hammond, 75, of 1209 Mt. Holly St., well known El Dorado merchant and member of a pioneer Union family, died Tuesday at 4:45 a.m. in a local hospital after a short illness. Mr. Hammond was born in Union County July 17, 1890, the son of Jefferson P. and Beulah Murphy Hammond. He was associated with Samples in the shoe department of the store for the greater part of his adult life. He was also a retired farmer. Mr. Hammond was a deacon in the First Presbyterian Church. He is survived by one son, Ralph Hammond of New Orleans; a daughter, Mrs. Chester Stafford of El Dorado; eight brothers, Boyd Hammond of Kemah, Tex., Ellis Hammond of Camden, and Newton G. Hammond, Elmer P. Hammond, Murphy Hammond, Edward C. Hammond, Willie A. Hammond and Hammett H. Hammond, all of El Dorado; three sisters, Mrs. Dan H. Crawford and Mrs. George W. Jackson, both of El Dorado, and Mrs. W. H. Walls of Alexandria, Va.; and four grandchildren, Ronald Stafford of Monroe, La., Hubert Hammond of Okinawa and Marty Hammond and Freddy Hammond, both of El Dorado. Funeral services have been announced for Wednesday at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Gary Jones and the Rev. John Purcell officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery under the direction of Rumph Mortuary. The body will remain at the mortuary until funeral time. Active pallbearers will be J. C. Pendleton, Leon McKinney, Joe Slade, Burney Wilson, Yost McKinney, Henry C. McKinney, Jr., Lee Zachary and W. J. Hines. Deacons and Elders of the First Presbyterian Church will be honorary pallbearers. (The El Dorado Times - August 17, 1965)
