Samuel David Alphin, 51, an El Dorado real estate holder and investor, died unexpectedly Saturday morning in a local hospital. He was born Nov. 18, 1916 in El Dorado and was the son of J. S. and Mary Armstrong Alphin. He was active in local and state American Legion work and served as American Legion past commander of Roy V. Kinard Post No. 10, national committeeman and was on the Executive Committee of post No. 10. He was a member of the Union County Election Committee for the Democratic party. He was a past chef de guerre of the 40 and 8 Club and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. A graduate of the Riverside Military Academy, he attended the University of Arkansas and Louisiana State University. He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. Alphin served for four years during World War II in the Coast Guard and served in both the North African and Pacific campaigns. He was a past president of the Razorback Club; a lifelong resident of Union County; and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of El Dorado. Survivors include one son, S. David Alphin, Jr. of the University of Arkansas; one daughter, Martha Armstrong Alphin of the home; and two aunts, Miss J. L. Armstrong Lumpkin and Mrs. Emory Little, both of El Dorado. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Gary M. Jones officiating assisted by Rev. J. Rayford McLean. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery under the direction of Young's. There will be flag presentation at the grave side. Pallbearers will be Bill Lake, Burney Dumas, Wilbur Davis, J. S. Brooks, George W. Mason, John Bell, Bob Paulus and Charles Nolan. (El Dorado Daily News - June 19, 1967)
