COOK 331 Infantry 83 Division
July 8, 1889 - January 22, 1922
El Dorado, Jan 24 - Coroner T. E. Barton and Sheriff Hancock returned to the city last night with the remains of "Jap" Davis, who was found murdered about seven miles east of the city, on the Calion road, about noon yesterday, by a passerby. The impassable condition of the road on account of continuous rains and heavy traffic made it impossible for the officers to go in cars, and the trip was made slowly in wagons. The murdered man had been struck on the back of the head with a club or other blunt instrument, and it is the opinion of the coroner that the crime was committed Sunday night near a whiskey still which the officers found about a mile from where the body was found, and that he had been removed there after being killed. The still and four barrels of mash were destroyed by the officers. An inquest will be held as soon as the sheriff completes his investigation of the case, which may be late this afternoon. Davis was about 36 years of age and formerly lived here with his mother, who now lives near Calion. The officers are working on the theory that the trouble was caused over the still or whiskey manufactured there. (Arkansas Democrat - January 24, 1922)
