Elsie Mae (Morris) Compton, 102, passed away peacefully May 13, 2013.

She was born February 24, 1911, in Turkey Creek, Arkansas, the daughter of the late Jeff and Gertrude Morris. She was the 4th of 11 siblings. In June 1936, she married William Arthur “Os” Compton, who preceded her in death.

Known as “Ms. Elsie”, she lived a life of service to others and to God in particular. She lived intentionally and with purpose. Anyone who knew Ms. Elsie would agree that Proverbs 31:10-31 describes her accurately.

Ms. Elsie was a teacher and librarian at Rural Special for 43 years. English was her primary subject. She loved teaching and she loved learning. She obtained her college degree while teaching and finished with credits equivalent to a graduate degree. Not only did she teach as a vocation, she taught as a way of life. She believed that anything worth doing was worth doing right. Ms. Elsie held herself to an exacting standard and excelled at most everything she did. Among other things, she was an amazing cook, seamstress, gardener, bookkeeper, and housekeeper. She was willing to teach, and did teach, many of her crafts to others.

Ms. Elsie was married to Os Compton for 67 years. Together, they raised two children and lived a full life. They were active in the lives of their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, always providing a welcoming home and spending time to know each individual. A characterizing trait of Os and Elsie was their differences. He was bold and loud; she was soft and gentle. However, they were likeminded when it came to loving their family, friends, and community. It was her example that eventually prompted him to become a Christian.

Ms. Elsie leaves a legacy of love as well as an incredible example of how to live life. She was industrious and grateful, she would not speak ill of others nor would she complain, she believed all things worked to the good and according to God’s plan, she read her Bible daily, she was a welcoming hostess to anyone who visited, she led a quiet life and tirelessly tended her business. She treated her offspring equally and taught them to be fair with each other so as to avoid any disagreements between them.

In the later years, as Ms. Elsie’s mind weakened, her love remained pure. She expressed it by dancing with joy, singing hymns and ballads, and eating dessert first. Just a few days before leaving this earth, she celebrated Mother’s Day by dancing with her daughter, doting on her son, and counseling on how not to disagree. She remained true to the end.

In addition to being predeceased by her husband, Ms. Elsie was predeceased by her son-in-law, Doug Lancaster and great grandson, Jay Compton. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, JT and Norma Compton; daughter, Niva Lancaster; grandchildren Ken (Karen) Compton, Kevin (Dana) Compton, Kris (Debra) Compton, Belinda Baldus, Reece (Kay) Lancaster, Sonya (Charlie) Daniels, and Vickey (Don) Vance; sisters Ruby Berry and Lois Ackerman; as well as 14 great grandchildren, and 11 great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.

A visitation will take place on Friday, May 17, 2013, from 1-2PM at Roller Crouch Funeral Home in Mountain View, Arkansas. Services will follow beginning at 2:00PM. Brother Frank Curtis is officiating. Interment will follow the service at Turkey Creek Cemetery in Mountain View, Arkansas.

Pallbearers are Ken Compton, Kevin Compton, Kris Compton, Reece Lancaster, Don Vance, and Charles Daniels.

Honorary pallbearers are Janice Miller, Gearldee Dodd, Dale Bonds, Deloris Brewer, Faye Rushing, and Ruby Berry.
