Local Flier Lost
(ancestry.com)
Lt. Peter Stanley Stewart, 26, of Jacksonville, a Navy pilot who was among the crew members aboard a Neptune patrol plane which went down somewhere in Alaska Dec. 14, was declared dead Thursday by the Denfense Department.
Stewart, a Navy flier since 1964 was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Stewart, 19 Phyllis Court here.
The Navy said an extensive search effort failed to turn up any trace of the missing aircraft.
It was on an operational flight from Kodiak, Alaska to its home base at Whiskey Island, Washington when it disappeared between Kodiak and Juneau. It passed over Yakutat Bay then no further contact was made.
The plane carried sea and artic survival gear but officials said survival time in the frigid waters of the north Pacific was limited.
The Stewarts have lived in Jacksonville for the past 12 years.
Lt. Stewart was a 1959 graduate of the Jacksonville High School where he lettered three years in football, basketball and track. He took his degree in 1964 from the State College of Arkansas, formerly Arkansas State Teachers College where he was active in sports. He was a member of Chi Ne Fraternity.
Other survivors include his widow, Mrs. Lind Lu Stewart, formerly of McGehee; a daughter, Tiffany, 3, and two sisters, Mrs.Anita Murphy of Riverside, Ca, and Miss Georgia Stewart of Jacksonville.
Memorial services will be announced by the base here.
