COLUMBIA, SC - Joel Benjamin Yancey Jr., passed away July 21, 2008 in Columbia, S.C. He was born October 24, 1927 in Texarkana, Ark. and was the son of the late Joel Benjamin and Francis Clay Yancey. Joel served in the United States Coast Guard and Coast Guard reserve graduating Officer Candidate School in New Haven, Conn. He retired as a lieutenant commander of a cutter class ship and was a graduate of the University of Arkansas.
Joel was a retired Vice President with the Insurance Company of North America having worked and lived in various cities including Little Rock, Ark. where he started, Columbia, Washington D.C. and the company's headquarters in Philadelphia, Pa. He was a member of many local and national insurance organizations.
After retiring, Joel worked in the golf industry which was his passion. He loved to play golf. Joel was very active in the Wildewood Country Club swim team and was the starter at the weekly meets.
Joel was a member of First Baptist Church of Columbia. He was as an usher for over 20 years where he routinely extolled the virtues of the Razorback football team.
Visitation services will be held on Wednesday, July 23, 2008 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Proctor Funeral Home in Camden, Ark. Graveside services will be in Salem Cemetery in Bearden, Ark. on Thursday, July 24th with burial following in the family plot. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, Columbia is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Floor 17, Chicago, Ill. 60601-7633 or to the First Baptist Church of Columbia Music Ministry, 1306 Hampton Street, Columbia, S.C. 29201.
Joel is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mildred Jean Yancey of Columbia; his son, Joel Scott Yancey of Atlanta, Ga.; daughter Michelle Yancey Smith and her husband Marc David of Greenville; sisters, Virginia Yancey Forsberg and Jo Yancey Hale of Dallas, Texas; and grandchildren, Caroline Elizabeth Yancey, Mary Margaret Yancey and Connor Yancey Smith.
