Family Plot (Overview) FREEMAN

Marianna Memorial Park (Marianna) Cemetery
Lee County,
Arkansas

George W. Freeman was a child at the end of the Civil War and his parents, Thomas Simeon Freeman (1823-1897) and Susan Margaret (Hamilton) Freeman (1828-1880), were impoverished. He claimed that he had little schooling as there were no schools. His father was an educated man and, after the Civil War, taught school and became a Presbyterian minister. George migrated to Arkansas from Tennessee as a young man, returning to Arkansas in the early 1880s. At the time of his marriage, he was employed as manager and bookkeeper at the general store in Vineyard, Arkansas. Most of the eleven Freeman children were born in Vineyard, and six children who died young were buried in the cemetery of a church there. In later years, Thomas Bennett Freeman, the oldest of the Freeman children, arranged to have the six children moved to the family plot in Memorial Park Cemetery.

George was a devoted husband and father. His hobbies were reading and gardening.
