BURGIN, James M. - This town was thrown into a fever of excitement this morning upon the sad intelligence being brought to town by Bud Wooten that James M. Burgin and wife were murdered while in bed last night at their home ten miles west of here. The mutilated corpses were found this morning about sunrise by a boy who works on the farm but boards at Mr. Burgin's father's. The alarm was immediately given and neighbors rushing in found the murdered man lying on the floor with his skull crushed in, supposed to have been done by a large rock found in the room. The wife and bride of only a few months, lay upon the bed having apparently died without a struggle, with a gaping wound in her left side, evidently the result of a thrust from a large pair of bloody scissors found on the floor near by. Robbery is presumed to have been the motive as all parts of the house as well as the dead man's clothes had been rifled and an open and empty pocketbook showed too plainly that the most atrocious crime in the annals of the county had been committed for the sole sake of robbery. The deceased was one of the most highly respected and prominent citizens in the county. He was about 35 years of age and was raised in Benton county. Last winter he was married to Abbie Hurlinger, one of Benton county's fairest daughters.
