Doss Lee Burgess Sr., 85, formerly of Batesville, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at a Conway nursing home.

Born Dec. 5, 1916, at Calico Rock, he was the son of Bill and Maude Burgess. He was a United States Army veteran and served at Camp Hood, Texas, during World War II. He operated an automotive parts store in Brinkley for many years before moving to Batesville where he served as Independence County tax appraiser for 10 years before retiring and moving to Jackson, Tenn. His hobbies were fishing, gardening and making people laugh. He was a people person who never met a stranger, always had a joke, and was loved dearly by his children, grandchildren and all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Vivian Keeney Burgess of St. Ann, Mo.; four daughters, Vera Sue Dancer of Pine Bluff, Irene Johnson of Memphis, Ginger Smith of Batesville and Sharon Leon of Conway; three sons, Doss Burgess Jr. of North Little Rock, Dennis Burgess and Jerry Burgess, both of Jackson; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Fred Burgess, Earl Burgess and Burl Burgess; a sister, Edith Gibson; his first wife, Audra Snyder Burgess; his second wife, Lucille Powell Burgess; a son, Joe William Burgess of Batesville; a grandson, Todd Long-Coffman of Alaska; and a granddaughter, Blanca Leon.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Citizens Roller Funeral Home in Marianna. Burial will be in Marianna Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday.
