1851 - 1928
U.S. Congressman. He moved with his parents to Trenton, Tennessee, attended Andrew College, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1872 and commenced to practice law in Marianna, Arkansas, in 1874. He elected mayor of Marianna, in 1875, but declined to serve as a member of the board of education and served as prosecuting attorney for the first judicial district, (1878-84). In 1893, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-third Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1903. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 77.
