Edwin Franklin Montgomery, age 78, of Marianna, died Saturday afternoon, April 25, 2009, at Crestpark Retirement Inn in Marianna after a long illness. Born in Marianna May 4, 1930, he was the son of Jesse Lane Montgomery formerly of Tensan Parish, La., and Marynell Latta Montgomery of Marianna. He was the first fifth-generation of the Marianna Public School System. At 15, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scout Organization.

Mr. Montgomery was the commander of the Marianna Unit of the Arkansas National Guard for a number of years. He was a member of the Marianna Fire Department and was the Fire Chief for twenty years. He formed and was Chief of the Marianna/Lee County Emergency Services during this time. He served as Mayor of Marianna for four years.

Mr. Montgomery was an honor graduate of the United States Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He served three periods of service at the Pentagon in Washington D.C. He wrote the National Civil Disturbance Operations Plan. He commanded the team of officers that restructured the Tables of Organization and Equipment of the United States Army.

In 1960, he married Verneal Stacks of Marianna, who survives him. He is also survived by three children: a son, Jesse Montgomery and wife Mary of Jonesboro, two daughters Mrs. Lynn Starling and husband Dan of Fayetteville and Ms. Mary Montgomery of Forrest City. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Daniel and Laura Starling of Fayetteville and Justin and Michael Montgomery of Jonesboro, and one sister Jessica and husband John Hopewell of Florida and one nephew Scott of Colorado.

Mr. Montgomery requested his remains be donated to the Medical Education and Research Institute of Memphis, Tenn. There will be a memorial service at a later date.

The family request memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church of Marianna or the Marianna Fire Department. Morgan Funeral Home of Forrest City is in charge of local arrangements.
