FAYETTEVILLE — James Byrd Clark, 74, of Fayetteville died April 5, 1996, at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville. He was born Aug. 26, 1921, at Tipton, Mo., to William and Lillie Byrd Clark. He was retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. after 40 years. He was a life member the Telephone Pioneers of America, Washington Masonic Lodge 1, Fort Smith Consistory, Scimitar Shrine Temple, Washington County Historical Society and Arkansas Alumni Associations Inc. He was also a member of Northwest Arkansas Shrine Club, United Commercial Travelers, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Heritage Club of the University of Arkansas, and was a charter member of the Fayetteville Jaycees. He served on the board of directors for the Washington Regional Medical Center and City Hospital Development Foundation and was vice president of the Regional National Cemetery Improvement Corp. He as preceded in death by his wife, Betty Atha Clark, on Dec. 19, 1985.

Survivors include two nieces, Makii Atha Watson of Fayetteville and Ada Atha Terry of Farmington; several great-nieces and nephews; one sister in law, Geraldine Riddle of Henderson, Texas.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Moore's Chapel and burial will he in Fairview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Betty Clark, 68, of Fayetteville, died Thursday following a lengthy illness. A native of Fayetteville, the daughter of Ernest and Naomi Atha, she was a retired senior vice president of McIlroy Bank and Trust, the first senior woman executive in the bank's history. A graduate of the University of Arkansas, she was active in area, state, regional and national banking organizations. She was a member of the board of directors of the Arkansas-Oklahoma Chapter of the American Bank Institute and active in the Arkansas Bankers Association and the National Bank Women. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, a charter member of Beta Sigma Phi and a member of the University Baptist Church.

Survivors are her husband, James B. Clark of the home; her mother; a sister, Geraldine Riddle of Henderson, Texas; two nieces; a great-nephew and two great-nieces.

Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at University Baptist Church with burial in Fairview Memorial Gardens, under the direction of Moore's Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Betty Clark Banking Scholarship at the University of Arkansas. Donations should be made payable to the University of Arkansas Foundation and sent care of University of Arkansas Alumni Association, P.O. Drawer 1070, Fayetteville, AR 72702.
