A Memorial to Gene (Red) Hampton
Will H Farrar

I believe that every person who knew Red Hampton really knew him, loved him for who he was and for what he was. He was a men that had a wonderful personality, tenderness of heart, friendliness, cheerfulness and kindness. At the very mention of his name or the sight of his countenance one would feel this man is a friend. It is my opinion that few if any excelled him in qualities of gentleman or peer.

He live 72½ years all of which were filled with useful service to God, to Country, to Family, and to Humanity.

In the field of his choice, religion, patriotism, fraternity, and others became a master: he searched out virtues and qualities which go to making a Man and incorporated them into his everyday life.

I know that all the people of Lee County go along with me in saying we all loved Red and all of us extend to his wife and family deepest sympathy and prayers, and our assurance that while we live he will live in our hearts, and his deeds shall not be forgotten.

Gene was associated with and active in many circles and organizations, whose existence was for the good of the Community, State, and Nation. Time nor space will permit a presentation of all of these but below you will find a report of his capacities in the field of service. His talent for leadership was impressed on the community through the large number of civic and fraternal organizations with he was connected. He was a veteran of World War I and World War II, a deacon in the Presbyterian Church, a member 50 years, American Legion, 40 and 8, Elk, Mason, Royal Arch Mason and Shriner, past Rotarian, past member of the school board, retired fireman (voluntary), Legislator.

He was very active in all civic welfare, any and every thing that came up pertaining to the peoples of his home were of his deepest concern and he always put forth his best efforts to do what was best.

In the passing of our fear friend and Brother many of us have recalled the joy that he brought to our lives as well as the Sunshine he scattered in daily walks of life. He has finished his allotted task, his earthy lodge is closed, but his act of kindness will never be forgotten and his service to all will be remembered by all who knew him.

There's an open gate at the end of the road,
Through which each must go alone,
And there's a light we cannot see.
Our Father claims his own.

Beyond the gate each love one,
Finds happiness and rest,
And there's a comfort and thought.
That a loving God Knows best.
