FAYETTEVILLE — Mary Elizabeth Osborne passed away on Jan. 25, 2012, in Washington Regional Medical Center Hospice, Fayetteville, Ark., after a 15-month battle with brain cancer. She was born Feb. 8, 1946, in Little Rock, Ark., to Howard and Edna Stone.

Mary was a retired public school teacher and librarian, and had worked in public schools throughout northwest Arkansas. She retired from the Fayetteville Public School System in 2009. After graduating from Harrison High School in 1964, Mary attended Arkansas Tech University in Russellville where she received a B.A. degree. In 1973, she received an M. Ed. degree from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

Mary loved life and her family. Travel was one of her passions, and she was able to have visited 30 countries on five continents, as well as many destinations in the United States. Mary loved her wide circle of friends and was affiliated with many organizations, including the P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter K, Maple Hills Garden Club, and enjoyed reading with her book club and playing bridge. She always had a kind word for everyone.

Mary is survived by her husband of 45 years, Richard Pierce Osborne; a son, Dr. Richard Pierce Osborne, II, and his wife Melonie; two daughters, Elizabeth Suzanne Osborne and Dr. Shelby Elizabeth Osborne; two grandchildren, Robert Hays Osborne and Elizabeth June Osborne; her mother, Edna Ferguson; her brother, Robert Howard Stone, and his wife Kay and daughter Ali; her uncle and aunt, William C. and Dorothy Corbin; and many cousins. Mary was preceded in death by her father, Howard Stone.

The family is grateful to Professor Gazi Yasargil and staff, UAMS, Little Rock, Ark., for the expert care and treatment they provided that allowed another wonderful year of life with Mary; to Drs. Malcolm Hayward, Eric Schaefer, Hershey Garner, and Kyle Cook of Highlands Oncology Group; and to the WRMC Hospice and staff in Fayetteville for the wonderful care she received, and to Dr. Jeffery Kellar.

Visitation will be at Beard's Chapel, 855 South Happy Hollow Road, Fayetteville, Arkansas, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on today, Jan. 29, 2012.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 30, 2012, at Central United Methodist Church, 6 West Dickson St., Fayetteville, Ark.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fayetteville Animal Shelter, 1640 South Armstrong Road, Fayetteville, AR 72701.
