Dangerously wounded at Wilson's Creek, Mo on August 10, 1861. George lingered in the hospital until his death. His body was transported home the following winter. His body lay in state at the Presbytrian Church in Old Washington. He was carried home by the Odd Fellows where he was buried with full military honors by former members of the Hempstead Rifles. He is buried in the family cemetery in the yard under the Magnolia tree.
