Hempstead County is Arkansas's fourth county, formed on December 15, 1818. The county is named for Edward Hempstead, a delegate to the U.S. Congress.
The county seat was originally in Washington, it is now located in Hope.
The county has a total area of 741 square miles, of which 727 square miles is land, and 14 square miles is water.
Hempstead County is considered as part of the greater regions of Southwest Arkansas.
