Sybil Whitehead Souter was born in Macedonia on March 28, 1925 to Spurgeon and Gracie Whitehead. She married Alvin Weldon Souter of Taylor on Dec. 25, 1946.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her firstborn son Tracey Weldon Souter, along with her daughter Tandy Grace Souter Lowery; and three sisters, baby Whitehead, Olive Whitehead Hunt and Dorothy Whitehead Johnson.
Sybil is survived by her son, Teddy Alvin Souter of Little Rock, and a former son-in-law, David Lowery of Taylor; a brother, James Selwyn Whitehead and his wife Jo Ann; two brothers-in-law, Charles Latson Souter of Princeton, LA, and Floyd Voyne Souter and wife Julia of Milledgeville, GA; a sister-in-law, Patsy Souter of Magnolia; and a multitude of nieces and nephews and cousins.


Sybil loved the Lord and her church families. She grew up in the Macedonia community, was saved as a teenager and joined the Macedonia Baptist Church. After her marriage, Alvin and Sybil moved to Baton Rouge, LA, for two years. They then relocated to Taylor in 1948, and opened a gasoline service sStation which they operated for 41 years.
They became members of First Baptist Church there for 48 years. She sang in church choir at Macedonia and Taylor for many years. Sybil was president of WMA at Taylor FBC for nine years, and a president of PTA in Taylor schools. She served on the FBC Building and Grounds Committee for many years.
She was responsible and arranged flowers at FBC Taylor for more than 20 years. She and her husband donated five acres of land to establish the Taylor Memorial Cemetery in 1978 to the City of Taylor. She was a member of the Cemetery Board also. She originated and planned the cemetery. In 2012 she had a new three columned brick and gate entrance built and installed, each of the columns were engraved in memory of Tracy Weldon Souter, Tandy Grace Souter Lowery and in honor of Teddy Alvin Souter.
Sybil and Alvin Souter celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on December 25, 1996 with more than 250 guests stopping by to wish them congratulations.
Sybil loved cooking and entertaining. One of her favorite phrases was, “Here, eat!” Among Sybil’s hobbies and interests was gardening and crocheting afghans, baby shawls, and working word puzzles.
