Cleades A. "Shorty" Smith, 85, of Mountain View, formerly of Powhatan, died Oct. 9, 2016, at NEA Baptist Hospital in Jonesboro.
Born April 25, 1931, in Powhatan, he was the son of Evan and Laura Smith. He served in the U.S. Army as a medical corpsman and was a riverboat captain. He was a member of Eastside Church of Christ in Mountain View.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Dempsey "Red" Smith, Tommy Gene Smith and Frank Smith; and a sister, Joan Drury.
Survivors include three sons, Cleatus Smith and wife Mary Ann, Eric Smith and wife Linda, and Tony Smith and wife Janette, all of Powhatan; a daughter, Vickie Adams and husband Randy, Harrah, Okla.; a brother, Jerry Smith and wife Jean, Piedmont, S.C.; five sisters, Pat Smith, Jeraldine Davis and Lois Colbert, all of Imboden, Mary Maxwell and husband Bill, Black Rock, and Bonnie Richey and husband Junior, Powhatan; five grandchildren, Jonathan Smith and wife Shannon, Zachary Smith, Anthony Adams and wife Tara, Alisha Cheatham and husband Dustin and Michael Smith; and seven great-grandchildren, Dalton, Colton and Dristin Smith; Justyn, Abigail and Kenzy Adams; and Hayden Cheatham.
Funeral is Thursday at 1 p.m. at Cox Funeral Home with Cindy Bragg officiating. Burial will be in Powhatan Cemetery.
Grandchildren and great-grandchildren will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.
Memorials may be made to Powhatan Cemetery.
