RAKES, Thomas Chesley - Thomas Rakes, aged 72, a well-known farmer living north of Bentonville on the Pumpkin Hollow road, was found dead yesterday afternoon in a field on his farm, his death the result of a heart attack. As this is written no funeral arrangements had been made.

Heart failure is thought to have caused the death of Tom Rakes, age 72, who was found dead on his farm three miles northwest of Bentonville about noon yesterday. Mr. Rakes had been stacking hay yesterday morning and as he did not come in to dinner a search was made for him. He had been dead about two hours when found. Funeral services were held at the home at three o'clock this afternoon, Rev. W.C. Hutton conducting the services. Burial was made in the Hart cemetery south of Bentonville where others of the family are buried. Besides his widow he is survived by three sons, Kilby of the home, Claude and Charles who live near Mena and a daughter, Mrs. Harley Featherston of the New Home community.

{from New Home} This community was greatly shocked and saddened by the sudden death of our neighbor, T.C. Rakes. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family in their loss, Charles and James Rakes of Mena and their families. Mr. and Mrs. Claud Rakes and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Wilson of Grove, Mrs. Chas. Roten and daughter of Vaughn were here to attend the funeral of their father and grandfather.

Funeral services for Thomas C. Rakes, aged 72, well known farmer of the New Home community three miles north of Bentonville who was found dead from a heart attack in one of his fields where he had gone to work on Wednesday afternoon, August 24th, 1932, were held Thursday afternoon at the Rakes home, conducted by the Rev. E.O. Coones, Baptist minister of the Little Flock community, this county. Interment was in the Hart cemetery south of Bentonville. Besides his wife Mr. Rakes is survived by four sons: Kilby of near Bentonville; Claude of Grove, Okla. and James and Charlie of Mena, Ark.; by five daughters, Mrs. Harley Featherston and Mrs. Lucinda Greene of near Bentonville; Mrs. Frances Pippinger of Indiana; Mrs. Emma Wilson of Grove, Okla. and Mrs. Mary Roughton of near Centerton. He also is survived by a number of grandchildren and many other relatives.

Thomas Chesley Rakes was born September 20th, 1860 in Carroll County, Virginia; died August 24th, 1932. He was married February 25th, 1885 to Miss Martha Colley. To this union were born ten children, the oldest child, Fanny Joyce, dying at the age of eight years. Four sons: James and Charles of Mena, Ark.; Claude of Grove, Okla. and Kilby of the home; five daughters: Mrs. Frances Pippenger of Elkhart, Ind.; Mrs. Emma Wilson of Grove, Okla.; Mrs. Mary Roughton of Centerton, Ark.; Mrs. Lucinda Green and Mrs. Ruth Featherston of the home address, survive. Besides his wife and children he leaves three brothers, Charles, Columbus and Aaron D. Rakes, Tarpon, Va. and one sister, Lucinda Anderson of Tandy, Va. and many other relatives. All his early life was spent in the State of Virginia, living on the same farm that he purchased when he married until March 5th, 1909 when he moved with his family to Arkansas, buying a farm near Bentonville where he has resided ever since. He was a strong believer in the Primitive Baptist faith, uniting with that church in September 1931. Funeral services were conducted at the home by his pastor, the Rev. 0. Koons, and burial was made in the Hart cemetery four miles south of Bentonville.
