BELLA VISTA — Virginia Mae Matthis, 71, of Bella Vista died Dec. 4, 2000, at her home. She was born Jan. 15, 1929, in Seminole, Okla., to Cecil John and Effie Sarah Sullivan-Semler. Her parents preceded her in death at an early age and she grew up with her aunt, Celia Jean Semler-Bryant in Liberal, Kan. She attended schools in Liberal and at Mount Carmel Academy in Wichita, Kan. She enjoyed singing and dancing. She was a choir member and soloist for Father Flanagan on radio station KFH and at the church she attended. She was a volunteer for the Girl Scouts, the Boy Scouts, Methodist Youth Fellowship, the Civil Air Patrol and other organizations. She was a former employee of Garden National Bank in Garden City, Kan., and for Boeing in Huntsville, Ala. She was a member of Whitesburg Baptist Church in Huntsville, Ala. She retired to Bella Vista in 1996.
Survivors include her husband, Charles W. Matthis Jr. of Bella Vista; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia L. Headrick-Heer and Michael of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Celia D. Headrick-Blair and Danny of Wlchita, Kan.; one son and daughter-in-law, Craig A. Headrick and Cynthia of Huntsville, Ala.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hiwasse Church of the Nazarene. Burial will be in Bella Vista Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Bella Vista Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Church of the Nazarene, P.O. Box 64, Hiwasse 72739.
